 The Dixie Chicks (named after
the Little Feat song
"Dixie Chickens") consists of Laura
Lynch on lead vocals, and sisters Emily Erwin
and Martie Seidel Maguire. The trio
originally formed as a quartet in 1989 with
guitarist Robin Lynn Macy. Prior to forming a
band, Erwin and Seidel would play music on
the streets of Dallas, and Seidel went on to
come in 3rd place in the National Fiddle
Championships.

debut LP, Thank
Heavens For Dale Evans.

Ol' Cowgirl and Macy left the group.

performing at the Presidential Inaugural and
released Shouldn't
A Told You That.

With each LP released
independently, the Dixie Chicks found
themselves as the opening act for the likes
of Garth
Brooks, Alan Jackson, George Strait,
and Emmylou Harris.

Lynch left the trio and rumors
persisted that Erwin and Seidel were trying
to give the group a more youthful and
modernized look. Lynch was replaced with
Natalie Maines (daughter of steel guitarist
Lloyd Maines of the Maines Brothers
Band). Seidel said of Maines joining
the group: "With Natalie, that's when
the wheels started rolling around. You could
tell there was excitement there... there was
energy." Maines had turned down a full
scholarship to attend Berklee College of
Music in Boston to join the group.

because my remark was disrespectful. I feel
that whoever holds that office should be
treated with the utmost respect."

As the Dixie Chicks talked with
media about the negative backlash from
anti-Bush comments made, as well as receiving
death threats, Bruce
Springsteen came to their defense with a
statement of support on his website:
"The Dixie Chicks have taken a big hit
lately for exercising their basic right to
express themselves. To me, they're terrific
American artists expressing American values
by using their American right to free speech.
For them to be banished wholesale from radio
stations, and even entire radio networks, for
speaking out is un-American. The pressure
coming from the government and big business
to enforce conformity of thought concerning
the war and politics goes against everything
that this country is about - namely freedom.
Right now, we are supposedly fighting to
create freedom in Iraq, at the same time that
some are trying to intimidate and punish
people for using that same freedom here at
home. I don't know what happens next, but I
do want to add my voice to those who think
that the Dixie Chicks are getting a raw deal,
and an un-American one to boot. I send them
my support."
