TIMELINE
Lupe Fiasco was born Wasalu
Muhammad Jaco on February 16, 1982, and raised in
Illinois. Lupe's first impression of hip-hop
music was distain because of its profane language
- but that changed by the 8th grade when Lupe
began rapping. When Lupe was 19, he joined the
group 'Da Pak' for a short time. Lupe's rise to
fame began when he met Jay-Z which led to a record deal
with Atlantic Records. Lupe's mixtapes also
caught the attention of Kanye West who asked Lupe to appear
on his 2005 LP. Rolling Stone has
described Lupe as "... the soul rebel who
refuses to believe righteous struggle has to be a
grind."
December 18: Lupe released Lupe
Fiasco's The Cool (available for download at iTunes and Amazon-mp3). The LP was a concept
album with a dark side representing many losses
Lupe encountered during its recording, including
the death of his father.
March 26: Lupe topped the Billboard
200 LP chart for 1 week, Top Digital Albums chart
for 1 week, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for
2 weeks, and Top Rap Albums chart for 3 weeks
with Lasers. The LP sold over 204,000
copies its first week of release in the US. The
LP also went Top 10 in Canada and Australia.
