Jennifer was born on September 12, 1981 in Chicago.
In 2004, America began to get to know Jennifer as she
made the Top 12 finalists on American Idol. Jennifer soon became one of
the few finalists with strong R&B voices, with
Jennifer becoming a little more visible with her
verbal sparring with judge Simon Cowell. American Idol voters didn't let Jennifer get
beyond the Top 7, and for most finalists in that
situation, that might be the peak of their career -
but not Jennifer. Jennifer went on to audition and
get the highly sought-after role of Effie White in
the motion picture adaptation of the classic Broadway
play Dreamgirls. While many American Idol alumni were struggling to keep
their music careers afloat, Jennifer was walking home
with an Academy Award.

The 3rd season of American Idol began and Jennifer made it
into the Top 12 finalists (as a 'wild card' finalist
selected by judge Randy Jackson).

Jennifer was voted of American Idol after making it to the Top 7
finalists. Elton John echoed the
feelings of many American Idol fans after Jennifer
was felt to be prematurely voted out of the
contest: "The three people I was really
impressed with, and they just happened to be black,
young female singers, and they all seem to be landing
in the bottom three. They have great voices. The fact
that they're constantly in the bottom three - and I
don't want to set myself up here - but I find it
incredibly racist."
Jennifer could be heard on the compilation American
Idol Season 3: Greatest Soul Classics on the track "Neither One
Of Us" (available for download at iTunes and Amazon-mp3).

Jennifer could be seen in the film Dreamgirls and gained universal praise
for her role in the film as Effie White.
