Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born February 9, 1977 in Colombia. Shakira wrote her first song by age 8 and was signed to Sony Music Colombia by age 13 (after leaving home to become a model). After conquering the world Latin music market, Shakira set her sites on the US with Pepsi commercials and an English-speaking LP.
