Chic is the creation of Nile
Rodgers and Bernard Edwards
who formed the group in 1972 - two years after
meeting in New York City. In the late 70s, Chic
topped the pop, soul, and disco charts and gave
the dance music sound some added credibility with
Rodgers being a premiere guitarist and Edwards on
bass. The original members of Chic included
Rodgers, Edwards, Tony Thompson on drums, Tom
Coppola on keyboards, and vocalists Norma Jean
Wright and Luci Martin.
October 22: Chic topped the Billboard
Dance/Disco chart for 8 weeks with "Dance,
Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)."
November 18: Chic hit the Billboard
Top 40 chart with their biggest hit "Le
Freak." The famous chorus 'aaa, freak out'
originally sung 'aaa, freak off' (a take on 'aaa,
f*ck off'.
November 25: Chic topped the Billboard
Dance/Disco chart for 7 weeks with "Le Freak
/ I Want Your Love / Chic Cheer."
December 2: Chic topped the Billboard
Soul Singles chart for 5 weeks with "Le
Freak."
December 9: Chic topped the Billboard
Hot 100 chart for 6 weeks with "Le
Freak."
While enjoying the
success of Chic, Rodgers and Edwards also helped
compose, produce, arrange, and perform with many
soul and disco artists including Sister
Sledge, Diana Ross, andDebbie
Harry.
March 21: Chic topped the Dance
Music Club Play chart for 1 week with "Chic
Mystique."
February 23: The live LP Live
At The Budokan was released. The set includes live
performances from April 17, 1996 in Tokyo - and
the last performance of Bernard Edwards who died
the following day of pneumonia.
September 19: Chic was inducted into
the Dance Music Hall of Fame.
June 20: Chic 'featuring Nile
Rodgers' topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs
chart for 1 week with "I'll Be There."
March 21: The National Recording
Registry selected "Le Freak" for
preservation noting the song being
"...culturally, historically, or
artistically significant."
