TIMELINE
Lady Gaga was born Joanne
Stefani Germanotta on March 20, 1986 in New York.
She began to play the piano at the age of 4,
learning by ear, and was writing for the piano by
age 13. When Lady Gaga was 17, she was accepted
for early admission into the Tisch School of the
Arts at NYU. Eccentric, flamboyant, and
theatrical, Lady Gaga rose to fame in the New
York underground music scene with outrageous on
stage antics and costumes, and with the dance
track "Beautiful Dirty Rich." Lady Gaga
began working for Interscope Records at the age
of 20 as a songwriter before releasing her own
material with her debut LP. She had previously
been signed and dropped by Def Jam when she was
19. She named herself 'Lady Gaga' in reference to
the Queen hit "Radio
Ga-Ga."
August 19: Lady Gaga released her
debut LP The
Fame.
The
Fame
eventually went on to top the LP charts in
Austria, Germany, Ireland, Poland, and
Switzerland.
August 23: Lady Gaga topped the
Canadian singles chart for 5 weeks with "Just Dance."
November 15: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Dance/Electronics Albums chart with The
Fame.
The LP would go on to jump in and out of the #1
spot on that chart well into 2018 - a total of
108 weeks at the top of the chart. The LP then
topped the same chart in 2017 after Lady Gaga
performed the half-time show at the Super Bowl -
making it 107 weeks at #1.
January 10: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Digital Songs chart for 4 weeks,
Digital Tracks chart for 4 weeks and the Pop 100
chart for 6 weeks with Colby O'Doniswith
"Just Dance."
April 11: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Hot 100 chart for 1 week, Digital Songs
chart for 1 week, and Digital Tracks chart for 1
week with "Poker Face."
April 25: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Top 40 Mainstream chart for 5 weeks and
Pop 100 chart for 2 weeks with "Poker Face."
December 26: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Dance Club Play chart for 2 weeks with
"Bad Romance."
Lady Gaga topped the
UK singles chart with "Bad Romance."
The
Famewas the #4 selling LP of the year selling
over 2.2 copies during the year in the US.
Lady Gaga had the top
single of the year in the UK with "Poker Face."

April 2: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Radio Songs chart for 1 week, Singles
Sales chart for 8 weeks, and Dance Singles Sales
chart for 18 weeks with "Born This Way."
April 9: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Pop Songs chart for 1 week with "Born This Way."
April 16: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Dance Club Play Songs chart for 1 week
and Dance Airplay chart for 1 week with "Born This Way."
June 11: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 2 weeks, Digital
Albums chart for 1 week, Top Internet Albums
chart for 1 week, and Dance/Electronic Albums

This Way. The LP sold over 1.1 million
copies its first week of release in the US. The
LP also topped the charts in the UK and Canada.
June 25: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Dance Club Play Songs chart for 1 week
with "Judas."
October 8: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Dance Singles Sales chart for 1 week
with "You And I."
October 29: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Dance Club Songs chart for 1 week with
"You And I."
November: Laday Gaga launched her
'Born This Way Foundation' to support
anti-bullying programs and youth empowerment
groups. The foundation will also be run with her
mom: "My mother and I have initiated a
passion project. Together we hope to establish a
standard of bravery and kindness, as well as a
community worldwide that protects and nurtures
others in the face of bullying and
abandonment."
August 31: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart for 3
weeks and Dance/Electronic Digital Songs chart
for 2 weeks with "Applause."
November 30: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week, Digital Albums
chart for 1 week, and Dance/Electronic Albums
chart with ARTPOP. The LP sold over 258,000
copies its first week of release in the US.
October 11: Lady Gaga topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart with Tony Bennett, Cheek
To Cheek. The LP sold over 131,000 copies
its first week of release in the US.
October 20: The A
Star Is Bornsoundtrack topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart, Album Sales chart, and
Digital Sales chart. The LP sold over 165,000
copies its first week of release in the US.
November 1: Lady Gaga topped the UK
Singles chart with help from Bradley
Cooper with "Shallow."
January 10: Lady Gaga won a Golden
Award for Best Original Song ("Shallow") and was nominated for Best
Actress In A Motion Picture - Drama (A
Star Is Born).
January 17: Lady Gaga won 2 Critics
Choice Awards for Best Actress (a tie with Glenn
Close) and Best Song ("Shallow"). Lady Gaga was also
nominated for 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards for
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor In A
Leading Role and Outstanding Performance by a
Cast in a Motion Picture both for A
Star Is Born.
January 26: Lady Gaga won 2 Grammy Awards including Best Song
Written for Visual Media (awarded to the
songwriter)
