- Led Zeppelin hail from the
UK and consisted of Robert Plant on vocals, Jimmy
Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass and
keyboards, and John Bonham on drums. Originally
the group formed out of The Yardbirds
and 'The New Yardbirds' before naming themselves
Led Zeppelin. In 1968, Led Zeppelin signed with
Atlantic Records and began recording their debut
LP. Led Zeppelin continues to be renowned as one
of the greatest and most influential rock bands
in history. The group broke up a few months after
the death of Bonham.
- January 9: Jimmy Page was born in
Heston, Middlesex. Page became interested in
music at age 12 when he began playing guitar,
which led to Page becoming highly sought after
for session guitar music as a young adult.
- January 3: John Paul Jones (John
Baldwin) was born in Sidcup, Kent. Jones was born
into a musical family and joined his first band
while in boarding school.
- May 31: John Bonham was born in
Redditch, Worcestershire.
- August 20: Robert Plant was born in
West Bromwich, England. Plant quit school when he
was 15 to pursue his music and joined a number of
bands before meeting Page and forming Led
Zeppelin.
- October 25: Led Zeppelin performed
their first show together under their new name at
the University of Surrey in England.
- January 12: Led Zeppelin released
their debut LP Led
Zeppelin I. The LP contained the Zeppelin
classics "Dazed And Confused,"
"Communication Breakdown," and
"Good Times Bad Times." The LP hit the
Top 10 in the US, Australia, and UK, and topped
the charts in Spain.
- October 22: Led Zeppelin released Led
Zeppelin II. The LP contained the classics
"Ramble On" and "Whole Lotta
Love" which became the group's first and
only Top 10 pop hit in the US.
- December 27: Led Zeppelin topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 7 weeks with Led
Zeppelin II. The LP also topped the charts in
Canada, Australia, Spain, Germany, and the UK,
and hit the Top 10 in Japan and Norway.
- October 5: Led Zeppelin released Led
Zeppelin III. The LP contained the favorites
"Immigrant Song" and "Hey Hey What
Can I Do."
- October 8: Led
Zeppelin III was certified gold.
- October 31: Led Zeppelin topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 4 weeks with Led
Zeppelin III. The LP also topped the charts in
the UK, Australia, and Canada, and hit the Top 10
in Norway, Germany, Spain, France, and Japan.
- November 8: Led Zeppelin released Led
Zeppelin IV also referred to as Four
Symbols. The LP became the groups biggest
selling LP with the classics "Stairway To
Heaven," "Going To California,"
"When The Levee Breaks," "Rock And
Roll," and "Black Dog." The LP
topped the charts in the UK and Canada, and hit
the Top 10 in the US, Norway, Australia, Japan,
Germany, France, and Spain.
- November 11: Led
Zeppelin IV was certified gold.
- February 14: Led Zeppelin had to
cancel a concert in Singapore when they were
refused entry into the country because of their
long hair.
- March 28: Led Zeppelin released Houses
Of The Holy. The LP contained the classics
"D'yer Mak'er," "The Ocean,"
"Over The Hills And Far Away," and
"The Song Remains The Same."
- May 12: Led Zeppelin topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 2 weeks with Houses
Of The Holy. The LP also topped the charts in
Canada, Australia, and the UK, and hit the Top 10
in Norway, France, Germany, Spain, and Austria.
- January 7: Fans of Led Zeppelin
rioted before a concert in Boston resulting in
over $30,000 in damages.
- February 24: Led Zeppelin released Physical
Graffiti. The LP contained the favorites
"Kashmir" and "Trampled Under
Foot." The LP was the first release on their
own record label, Swan Song.
- March 6: Physical
Graffiti was certified gold.
- March 29: Led Zeppelin topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 6 weeks with Physical
Graffiti. The LP also topped the charts in
Canada and the UK, and hit the Top 10 in Austria,
Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France, and
Norway.
- August 4: Plant was in a car
accident with his family on a Mediterranean
island.
- May 1: Led Zeppelin topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 2 weeks with Presence. The LP also topped the
charts in the UK, and hit the Top 10 in Japan,
Norway, New Zealand, France, Australia, and
Sweden.
- September 28: Led Zeppelin released The
Song Remains The Same. The LP was a live
soundtrack for the concert film of the same name
and was recorded and filmed at Madison Square
Garden in New York in 1973. The LP topped the
charts in the UK, and hit the Top 10 in the US,
Japan, Canada, and New Zealand.
- July 26: A North American tour was
cancelled and Plant took a break from music after
his son Karac died at the age of 5 from a stomach
infection. Plant would later write "All Of
My Love" for his son.
- September 15: Led Zeppelin topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 7 weeks with In
Through The Out Door. The LP also topped the
charts in Canada, New Zealand, and the UK, and
hit the Top 10 in Australia, Spain, France, and
Japan.
- July 7: Led Zeppelin played their
last live performance with drummer John Bonham in
West Berlin.
- September 25: The group's drummer, John
Bonham, died at the age of 32. The cause of death
was determined to be asphyxiation from vomit -
after drinking heavily the day before.
- September 27: Led Zeppelin's US tour
was cancelled.
- December 4: Led Zeppelin broke up
issuing the statement: "We wish it to be
known that the loss of our dear friend, and the
deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves
and our manager, have led us to decide that we
could not continue as we were."
- November 19: Led Zeppelin released
their 9th and final studio LP Coda. The LP was a collection
of outtakes from the group's span of recordings.
The LP hit the Top 10 in the US, Canada, New
Zealand, Australia, and the UK.
- July 13: The remaining members of
Led Zeppelin performed at Live Aid in
Philadelphia.
- September 7: The box set Led
Zeppelin was released. The
compilation contained the unreleased songs
"Traveling Riverside Blues" and
"White Summer" and a new version of
"Moby Dick / Bonzo's Montreux."
- January 12: Led Zeppelin were
inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Tension between Plant, Page, and Jones was
apparent when Jones stated: "Thank you, my
friends, for finally remembering my phone
number" (referring to side projects Plant
and Page had done over the years without Jones).
- January 30: Led Zeppelin were honored
with the International Artist Award at the American Music Awards.
- November 11: The live set BBC
Sessions was released. The set
included material from various BBC Sessions in
1969 and portions of a London concert in 1971.
- November 25: Led
Zeppelin IV was certified 17x platinum, Physical
Graffiti was certified 9x platinum, Led
Zeppelin II was certified 8x platinum, Houses
Of The Holy was certified 8x platinum, In
Through The Out Door was certified 6x platinum,
Led
Zeppelin I was certified 6x platinum, Led
Zeppelin was certified 6x platinum, Led
Zeppelin III was certified 4x platinum, Presence was certified 3x platinum,
The
Complete Studio Recordings was certified platinum,
and Led
Zeppelin Remasters was certified 2x platinum.
- April 21: Robert Plant
and Jimmy Page released Walking
Into Clarksdale. At a news conference, Plant said
of the new music: "This is our first
collection of original songs written together
since 1978. It is basically 4-piece music, with a
little bit of assistance."
- February 13: Led Zeppelin were honored
at the Grammy Awards with the Lifetime
Achievement Award. The group has never won a
Grammy Award within a category, yet 4 of their
songs were included in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
- November 14: Led Zeppelin were
inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame.
- December 1: Led Zeppelin topped the
Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart for 8 weeks with
Mothership.
- December 10: Led Zeppelin reunited for
their first concert in 19 years in London. Robert
Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones were
joined by Jason Bonham (the son of the late John
Bonham).
- March 9: Led Zeppelin won a
copyright battle over claims that part of
"Stairway To Heaven" were stolen.
