On November 21st, Hutchence was
found dead in a hotel room in Australia.
Hutchence was 37 and early reports suggested
that the singer hung himself with a leather
belt found in his room. Hutchence's partner,
Paula Yates, reportedly heard the news from
their home in London. The couple had a baby
daughter together and were planning to marry
next year. INXS was in Australia to celebrate
the band's 20th anniversary together.

 INXS members spoke to Australian
media about the death of their lead singer,
Michael Hutchence. The guitarist of INXS, Tim
Farriss, stated: "I can't be angry at
Michael because if he did take his own life,
I feel he was sick. There's been a lot of
recent things, like anti-depressants and
alcohol mixed together making people suicidal
and I think the world's got to take a deeper
look at it and make sure that we're not
giving these people who have a chemical
imbalance in their brain the wrong
things." It is assumed that Hutchence
had been drinking prior to his suicide, and
anti-depressants were found in his hotel
room. Another band members, Kirk Pengilly,
discussed other problems Hutchence was
dealing with including a high-profile
relationship. The future of INXS as a band is
currently not known or confirmed by the band,
although some reports have stated that the
remaining band members are looking for a new
lead singer.

 The coroner overseeing the death
of Hutchence ruled that the cause of death
was suicide by hanging. He also stated that
Hutchence was in a "severe depressed
state" over personal problems and ruled
out claims that the death was caused
accidentally due to an auto-eroticism act. A
blood analysis did reveal that Hutchence had
alcohol, cocaine, and Prozac in his system.
The coroner's official statement about the
evidence: "I am satisfied that the cause
of death was 'hanging.' I am also satisfied
that there was no other person involved in
causing the death... I am satisfied that the
standard required to conclude that the death
was a suicide has been reached. I am
satisfied that the deceased intended and did
take his own life."

 Hutchence's girlfriend, Paula
Yates, disagreed that Hutchence committed
suicide and is disputing coroner findings.
Yates told a television interviewer that she
was seeking legal advice to have the
coroner's findings that Hutchence committed
suicide, overturned. She stated "In no
way do I accept the coroner's verdict of
suicide... I will be making it abundantly
clear that because of information that I and
only I could know about Michael... I cannot
accept the verdict... and I won't have my
child grow up thinking that her father left
her not knowing the way he loved her."

INXS performed together with Jimmy
Barnes contributing lead vocals.
