TIMELINE

Journeybutton.gif (123 bytes) Journey began in San Francisco, California in the early 70s with Neal Schon and George Tickner on guitar, Gregg Rolie on keyboards, Ross Valory on bass, and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. Tickner left in 1975 and Steve Perry joined as lead vocalist in 1978. Steve Smith replaced Dunbar on drums in 1979, and Jonathan Cain joined in 1981, replacing Rolie on keyboards. The band's journey took off in 1974 when they signed with Columbia Records.

Drummer, Steve Smith, also left the band. Reportedly, Perry and keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, discussed the limitations of Perry being able to tour and it was decided that Cain and guitarist, Neil Schon would reform the group with a new lead singer. Perry would be pursuing a solo career, and had a song on the soundtrack for Quest For Camelot called "I Stand Alone."
