"I'm
just coming out and I'm going to clearly be
myself - I write what I feel, I never worry
what others think." - Avril Lavigne
TIMELINE
A singer, a songwriter, a
'skater-punk' - and a teen - Avril Lavigne's
talents hit the mainstream in 2002. Born in
Canada, Avril began performing very early at
church, festivals and talent contests. Eventually
she scored with a record deal with Arista Records
after winning a trip to New York City and
catching the attention of Antonio "LA"
Reid. Avril was 16 and moving to New York to work
on her debut LP. Avril told VH1.com: "When I was 2 my mom
said she knew I was going to be a singer. I've
been performing ever since I was a young kid. So
I've known I wanted to do this for awhile. I
always knew in my heart that I'd be
(singing)."
June 1: Avril hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "Complicated." Avril said about the song:
"I was fed up with people being two-faced
and phony. It can be a boyfriend or a friend or
people you work with... That's what that song's
about: people being fake."
June 4: Avril released her debut
LP - Let
Go.
She said of the LP: "I couldn't go as
alternative on this record as I wanted to, but I
just didn't want to be bubble gum pop."
May 5: Avril topped the
Billboard Hot 100 chart for 1 week, Pop 100 chart
for 1 week, Digital Songs chart for 1 week, and
Digital Tracks chart for 1 week with "Girlfriend."

Billboard 200 LP chart for 2 weeks and Top
Digital Albums chart for 1 week with The
