Seal was born Seal Henry
Samuel in England on February 19, 1963 to
Nigerian and Brazilian parents. Before beginning
a singing career, Seal studied architecture and
worked in electrical engineering. Although he had
won Grammys and had success in the US, and
internationally, questions about his facial
scares still persist. The scars were caused by a
disease called lupus which Seal suffered from
when he was a child. The particular strain of
lupus Seal deals with causes blistering
especially around the facial area, which when
ruptured cause deep scarring. When questioned
about his scares, Seal had often eluded to
mystical or spiritual causes. In the late 80's,
Seal began singing with various bands and on his
own - eventually meeting producer, Adamski.
May 12: Seal and Adamski
collaborated on the track "Killer"
which shot to #1 in the UK for 1 week.
June: The success of
"Killer" lead to a record contract for
Seal.
June 11: Seal's debut LP, Seal, was released and gave him
his first Top 10 hit, "Crazy." The dance track
"Killer" was also released in the U.S.
and made some waves on the dance scene.
February 12: Seal dominated the Brit
Awards. When asked how Seal classifies his own
music he responds: "...soul music... in the
literal sense of the word... music from the soul."
May 31: Seal's second LP was also
entitled, Seal, and was released (he
stated "(because he) could not think of a
better title at the time"). The LP was later
referred to as Seal
II.
November 17: A new LP by Seal called Human
Being
hit stores. Trevor Horn (the producer of Seal's
first 2 LPs) was an influence on the LP once
again after the 2 worked out their differences
for the new LP.
Seal told CNN about Human
Being:
"The album is more like a celebration of
human beings and all the wonderful things we
human beings do when we're living in our natural
state, which I believe to be love. (The first
single "Human Beings") ...was initially
inspired by the death of and the loss of the 2
rappers, Notorious
B.I.G. and (particularly) 2Pac. I think there was a
situation where there was a perfect example of a
lack of love of the self. So it was initially
inspired by those 2." At the end of
November, Seal talked with MTV more about his
working relationship with producer, Trevor Horn:
"Well, we fell out to put it bluntly... but
then I think that's the thing about any working
relationship or creative working relationship, if
they tend to be successful, they also tend to be
tempestuous. I think that's largely because you
have two creative minds, personalities, working
together and it's not as if Trevor is just a
producer. He's also an artist. The fact that he
produces records, you know, it's coincidental.
But he is a bass player by trade, and also he's a
singer and he has fronted a band before, a couple
of bands actually. So you really, if you put the
two of us together in a room, yes we have, I
hope, great creative moments, but there can also
be tempestuous times. Particularly when you are
striving for something new and you don't want to
repeat yourself. I guess it would be similar to
that of a band situation, so we fell out, and we
kissed and made up and we finished the record.
That's basically what happened."
September 9: Seal released Seal
IV,
with the first single "Waiting For You." The LP evolved
after 2 years of working on a new LP and
scrapping work meant to be titled Togetherland
after Seal felt wasn't good enough, telling VH1:
"There is an emotional quality in my music
that resonates with people. If theres no
emotion or belief in the song or the delivery,
then there is nothing. It was not the easiest
reality to come to terms with, but it was one
that I had to accept."
September 27: Seal topped the Billboard
Dance Club Songs chart for 2 weeks with "Get
It Together."
